Pandora's box: The evil of pretentiousness

Long ago, the world was different. It was simple but with its own challenges. In a corner somewhere, lived Pandora. It is said that she opened a box, freeing up all kinds of evils to spread through the society. While violence, dishonesty, greed, selfishness may be some of the "better" known ones, the evil of "Pretentiousness" has its own far-reaching impacts.

Things as basic as food can be pretentious today. A box of candies, assorted from the very best of Mediterranean fruits, hand picked by the renowned chef from the exotic country of Luxembourg are basically the candies you purchased 4 of which for Re. 1 from the nearby grocery store. The box now sells at INR 1000/- only, and if you are lucky, you get 25 instead of 24 candies.

Golgappas have magically transformed to a delicious serving of Indian Bread made of nutritious whole grains dipped in tamarind sauce with a pinch of salt and filling of healthy boiled peas or potatoes. Sounds yummy!

Sports is something which has been affected as well. Among other things, the most brutally demanding and challenging game of Golf emerged. Enthusiasts marvel at the unparalleled athletic standards of the game, apart from all the excitement and adrenaline rush it brings. For the uninitiated, here's what the sport demands from the athletes:
  • Money, lots of it
  • Physical fitness of highest standards -
    • You must be able to move around in a caddie without feeling dizzy.
    • You must be able to swing a golf club.
    • You must be able to carry the weight of a cap over your head for the most part of the game.
  • And money, lots of it
How could art remain unaffected! If anything, it was the first to change its form. You are now allowed to imagine art on a clean wall. A line on a canvas depicts multitudes of the emotions, you can pick any based on your mood and convenience. A rock balanced on two joints has become the "Levitated Mass", created merely at a cost of USD 10 million. The barriers to human creativity have been shattered to come up with this beautiful piece of sculpture.

The effect is that while the poet today simply wants to tell that he had steamy sex, he inadvertently ends up describing the multitudes of emotions, which only a few knew humans were capable of possessing.

Clothes have absorbed the culture of pretentious as well. The more uncomfortable you are in a set of clothes, the better is your dressing sense. Nothing says classy like a tuxedo which makes it a struggle to pee or allows you to soak in your sweat by the end of the day. Nothing says dynamic and vibrant personality like torn clothes; the more, the merrier.

The human life overall has become pretentious. The definition of success has changed. It now precisely means to travel the world, get a home, a car, "develop a (specific) taste" in drinks, music, art and become a part of the much-devoured class of elites.

Pandora may have died, but her legacy continues to live. Next time you see a designer bag worth $$$, do pay her a tribute.
